In the DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia for those who are not aware), there has been a highkey renaissance of young artists. From models to rappers, designers to photographers, people are extending their creativity and producing artwork definitely worth noticing. It seems like artists nowadays are putting the DMV on the map, and I'm not just talking making a cute drawing and tweeting it. Young artists are becoming entrepreneurs and using their art to brand themselves in ways like never before.
Novice Magazine, created by Akera Miles, is a DMV-based magazine that features dope artists doing their thing. It is a colorful collection of interviews and aesthetically satisfying images that displays what the DMV is really about. Many people are not aware of the genius being produced in D.C. What better way to create a platform for greatness than by making a magazine?
Novice Mag's first print issue was released this June, and the hard work put into making this finished product definitely shows. The magazine is a piece of artwork itself, like literally a portable museum. It has amazing photography and artwork inducing incessant page-turning.
Not only does the magazine feature some of the DMV's hottest artists, but it also touches on political issues and reveals the stance of young minds in the nation's capital. Many people do no realize how important art and creativity is for expression and getting a point across that cannot be explained through a simple headline or news report.
As an artist, getting your work off the ground is extremely difficult if you're not living in Los Angeles or New York, which I am starting to realize from living in NYC this summer. One interview in the magazine features Shaheed Finn who is an up and coming model who had the opportunity to model for Kanye in this winter's Yeezy Season 3 show. The interviewer "SB" asked Shaheed if he thought his work wasn't getting enough attention. Shaheed replied with, "Of course, all the time, but I just started [and] you don't just go big right when you're signed or you start; you have to build."
Everyone wants to be self-made, but it takes more than retweets to make that happen. Through interviews and articles Novice Mag offers, more people have a chance to see new talent and follow their journey.
If you are interested in finding fresh faces and new music and art to dive into, Novice Magazine is definitely something you should check out. In this new digital age, paper magazines have lost popularity, but this summer issue of magazine is definitely a game-changer. The interviews feature artists like Merimart, Miles Loftin, Mikey Tha Savage, Darius Moreno, Domyenn, Lloyd the Abstract, and many more.
Honestly, if you haven't bought your issue of Novice Mag... wyd? Let's just say I warned you. Follow Novice Magazine on Twitter @NoviceMag and visit the website novicemagazine.com.
